Well here it is the first day of Winter and the East Coast has had it's big snow storm. Now when they are calling for snow I'm one of those who stay home, but it is Christmas shopping time and the wife says she needs to go shopping. Now it's not to Willowbrook just down the road she has to go to the Lenox outlet down in Cranbury NJ. So here it is 1:00 p.m. on saturday and we are headed out with a storm coming from the South. So, down 287 to the turnpike to Cranbury at exit 8a.(just in case you haven't been there). As we get off the turnpike the fluries are starting. We get into the outlet and boy could this woman shop. She has her list and we are out in 25 minutes. Now comes the ride back and there is a light snow falling. The turnpike is down to 45 M.P.H. we make it to exit 10 which is 287 and headed back North. Now it did not look that bad until we reached one section of 287 and on the Southbound side there is a major accident, and no sooner then you could say black ice, it happened on the Northbound side. Now in my 30 years as a P.O. this was one for the books. There were cars up on the right shoulder spun around and pointing the wrong way, cars kissing each other on both the right and left lanes, cars on the left shoulder into the woods and also a roll over. The carnage was over a mile long, with about 30 vehicles involved, and one lone tropper to handle the mess. There did not appear to be any major injuries. The one thing that did get me excited was the people out of their vehicles and walking in the roadway. If, about 30 cars could not control themselves and are all over the place what makes you think the rest of us nuts on the road looking at this mess are not going to slide into you as you walk around!
Stay in your car or if you have to get out don't stand in the roadway, go as far as you can onto the shoulder and pay attention to traffic, because most drivers are now looking at you and not the road!!!! Well we made it home O.K. but my wife will now shop earlier in the season.
I guess when it was all done we had about 12 inches here in Montville. The snow blower worked and since it was a light snow was easy to blow off the driveway. The only bad thing about this cold weather and snow was I have not been able to get the ice skeating rink set up in the back yard. Maybe I'll get it out by March?
